 Teaching Experience
Digital Media Faculty
Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, California)
September 1996 - May 2002

Taught graduate and undergraduate courses in virtual worlds design, emphasizing interactive online avatar events. Also taught ancillary courses in HTML, Web design, graphic tools, FTP skills, Windows NT fundamentals.
The teaching proceeds by creating small teams that study theory and then develop projects based on concepts. Sample results are on the Projects page of this resume. The projects explore new concepts which often result in books or articles about the process (see Research page). The classes earned the Great Teacher Award from the 1996 graduating class in Computer Graphics at Art Center College of Design.

Projects Developed in Classes Taught:

  • Deep Cyberspace Seminars 1997 and 1998, completely online seminars conducted internationally with 3D virtual worlds and Internet message boards. Students study the interface theory and design of virtual worlds by learning inside the virtual dimension.
  • ACCD World designed and built over 9 terms (1997-2000) at Art Center College of Design, this 3D interactive world (in ActiveWorlds software) pioneers 3space avatar navigation in virtual worlds. Video captures of this cumulative student work are available from the Projects page of this resume.
  • CyberForum@ArtCenter, a series of online interactive events hosted and moderated by graduate students 1999-2001. Log files and screen captures of the events are available along with published reviews by journalists who witnessed the events.
  • Adobe Atmosphere Gallery from 2000-2001. Students began building with the beta version of Adobe Atmosphere, using 3D worlds to host events and to visualize environmental designs.
  • "Avatars Dance Kung-Fu" Collaboration UCLA / SCI-Arc / Art Center, September 2000, performed on two occasions: in the UCLA Visualization Portal (Westwood) and also in the EDA Building (Westwood), Students produced events in which international 3D avatars dance in real time with bodies in physical space.
  • Avatecture for the Hotel Pro Forma, 2001. Architectural collaboration to design a performance space for the Danish dance company Hotel Pro Forma in a suburb of Copenhagen. Collaboration with PUSH / SCI-Arc Architect Christophe Cornubert developed a finalist proposal for a building with "avatar alcoves" that embed the virtual (online, real-time) informational aspect of contemporary architecture.
  • Avatar Diplomacy, After September 11, 2001, developed an International Avatars Initiative. Still in development, the proposal involves on-site mentoring of youth in conflict zones and college-hosted international "avatar encounters" where youth meet to share the process of trans-national avatar design through games and role-playing.

Sample video and images from these projects are available on the Projects page of this resume.
